The Whippany Line is the M&E’s “home base”. It was the only line the railroad operated from its inception in 1895 until 1983, when the Chester Branch was added. The nine mile line runs east from Morristown, through Hanover and East Hanover, to Roseland. Customers include a roofing supply distributor, propane distributor, a lubricant manufacturer, a power company, and two food product producers. The line is also home to the M&E’s shop and offices in Morristown. Along the line in Whippany, the M&E hosts the Whippany Railway Museum, with its collection of historical rail equipment. The yard in Whippany also is the storage site for the privately owned classic railcars online, and some of the New Jersey State Railroad Historical Collection, which will be the backbone of the new state railroad museum when it is built.
